by Rick Dobson, Ph.D.

Who is it for?

This book targets developers and computer fans who use Access databases and want tot get a firm grasp of the Microsoft .NET Framework.  The book deals almost exclusively with Access databases.  This book builds on the experience of Access developers with Visual Basic 6 and VBA as a stepping stone to mastering Visual Basic .NET.  The book gives you  specific instructions about how the .NET Framework pertains to Access development.  You will learn how to develop robust Windows, Web, and XML Web services applications with  the tools covered in this book.

Another audience for  this book is .NET developers who want to enhance their ability to create solutions specifically for Access databases.  This community of developers consists of those who have not found the specific information they need in other, more general Visual Basic .NET or ADO.NET books.  The samples throughout the book reinforce your general understanding of Windows and Web forms as they illustrate how to leverage that knowledge for performing data access, data  manipulation,  and even data definition tasks with Access databases.

Major themes emphasized throughout the book include Visual Basic .NET, Windows Forms, ADO.NET, and Web development.  These topics gain focus in the book's introduction that offers an overview of the .NET Framework as well as in multiple follow-up chapters that are loaded with in-depth analyses and code samples illustrating  unique capabilities offered by each development environment.  A special appendix drills down on XML and its relationship to datasets.  You can download the sample files from the book's Companion Content page on the Web by connecting to http://www.microsoft.com/mspress/books/6370.asp.
