Hi FullName,

This message is your second October message from ProgrammingMSAccess.com.  It’s just about two weeks since our last message, but there’s lots of interesting items to report.  First, we have a new code sample in the VBA section, and we updated the reference content on the previously available VBA code sample pages.  Second, we are announcing a new DVD on T-SQL programming by the ProgrammingMSAccess.com webmaster.  Third, we give you a heads up about an upcoming seminar presentation series during February through March 2005.  Fourth, we just posted a fresh filter set for SPAM Blocker.

NEW SOFTWARE SAMPLE

The ProgrammingMSAccess.com site started shortly after the release of the initial edition of Programming Microsoft Access 2000.  Since that initial release of the book two subsequent editions were published for Access 2002 and Access 2003.  Over the years, we have added VBA code samples to the site to illustrate Access programming techniques.  The most recent edition of the book, Programming Microsoft Office Access 2003, contains loads of VBA samples appropriate for all recent versions of Access in addition to a special emphasis on covering what’s new for Access 2003 developers.

Our site’s most recent VBA sample is a demonstration of how to program conditional formats for Access forms.  The format for presenting the most recent sample is slightly different than earlier VBA samples because you can see the code on the left, and the impact of the code on the right.  If you want to know more about conditional formats, we treat it in more depth in Programming Microsoft Office Access 2003.

NEW DVD BY WEBMASTER

I have been hard at work churning out content for you.  My latest DVD, titled Beginner's SQL Server 2000 T-SQL Programming on DVD, is available for sale from Amazon.com and the publisher, DV Press.  This 2-disc set contains 7 lessons that provide you a review of all the core techniques for performing data access and data manipulation. A separate lesson introduces you to techniques for creating your own databases and tables.  In addition, you learn how to store code for reuse in stored procedures and user-defined functions.  There is also a whole lesson on managing SQL Server security.  Each lesson equips you with concepts, keywords, and techniques for writing SQL statements with SQL Server 2000.  The DVD contains 8 hours of training with video shots of the presenter, slides, and code samples with their results.  Most of the samples run with Query Analyzer.

I’ll be adding more content about this newly released DVD at the site and in subsequent messages.  For now, you can learn more about the DVD from the Amazon.com site or the publisher’s site.  If you get the DVD from the publisher’s site and you are one of the first 30 persons to sign our Guest Book from the continental US within each month during the quarter, we’ll send you a 15% off coupon for purchasing DVDs directly from the DV Press site.  We still have a few coupons left for October, so signup right away if you want one.

HEADS UP FOR NEW SEMINAR PRESENTATION SERIES

We ran our last seminar presentation series during July and August 2004.  We are making plans for a re-run of this seminar during February and March 2005.  Please take a moment to look at our seminar site and tell us if the seminar interests you.  We offered the seminar at different time zones (Easter vs. Pacific) and during different day parts (days vs. evenings).  The seminar is web-based, but it is much more than the typical webcast.  First, we offer 21 hours of training.  Second, we limit the class size so to make the training personal.  Third, registrants receive an 800 number so that they can ask questions and interact with the seminar presenter.  Fourth, we offer tremendous prizes to registrants.

Our 2004 seminar presentation was on VB.NET and ADO.NET.  We plan on offering the same content this time.  You’ll be able to complete the seminar in 3 days or 6 evenings.  In addition, we might add an additional optional day of training on VBA or T-SQL.  ProgrammingMSAccess.com is known throughout the Internet as one of the premiere locations to find VBA samples.  In addition, your webmaster has been a T-SQL enthusiast since the release of Access 2000 with its special support for SQL Server databases.  He has written two books and two DVDs with SQL Server in the title.

Don’t forget to sign our Guest Book and tell us if you are interested in our VB.NET/ADO.NET seminar or either of our two optional topics (VBA or T-SQL).  I also welcome hearing back from you about when you would like the seminar offered in terms of time zones and day parts.

SPAM BLOCKER UPDATE

We just posted a fresh set of filters for SPAM Blocker, our solution to filtering spam.  SPAM Blocker from ProgrammingMSAccess.com is a VBA program that runs in back of Outlook 2000/2002/2003.  The most recent round of filters is the fifteenth issued for SPAM Blocker 2.0 since its initial release in March 2004.

SPAM Blocker features an empirically based approach to filtering spam.  Our experience confirms that if you develop a large set of carefully developed filters, you can block spam messages besides those for which you initially developed the filters.  Unfortunately, we also learned that new spam messages can bypass filters for previous spam messages.  Therefore, we regularly refresh our filters at the pace of about twice per month.

Any purchaser of our Standard edition gets our best set of filters at the time of purchase.  Anyone who purchases an Upgraded edition of SPAM Blocker can download fresh filters over the life of their license for one, two, or three years.  At the end of the license, an Upgraded edition owner can renew their license or use SPAM Blocker like any Standard edition purchaser.
