Dear FullName,
This message conveys the latest news and views from ProgrammingMSAccess.com. First, you get a quick reminder and update about the first presentation of our VB.NET/ADO.NET web seminar. While the next three topics can stand alone, they also have a bearing on the seminar. The second topic is a news flash about SPAM Blocker, my personal spam blocker tool. The third topic is an announcement of the new Microsoft Express suite. This topic ties into the seminar because the suite gives you free access to VB.NET and SQL Server, which are topics covered in our VB.NET/ADO.NET web seminar. Finally, we include comments based on a reply from a purchaser of my Programming Visual Basic .NET and ADO.NET with SQL Server and Access DVD. The purchaser asked how they could get a copy of SQL Server 2000. This DVD covers content similar to that in our live, interactive web seminars, and some of our samples will work with SQL Server. Therefore, you will benefit from knowing how to obtain it.
BTW, we are still in the process of selecting winners for the second quarter prizes. The winners will be selected and posted before the next message, and we’ll include content about new prize opportunities during the third quarter in the next message.
As you may have noticed in our last message, we announced that there are sufficient registrants now to proceed with all three presentations of the web seminar. Recall that each presentation is really a presentation series in that you have the opportunity to obtain up to 21 hours of training over either three days or six evenings. You’ll be able to ask questions and hear answers over our 800 telephone number and you can view seminar slides and see live demonstrations in your browser. Furthermore, all registrants receive a valuable set of gifts and earn the chance to win a great set of prizes.
The first seminar presentation starts on July 13, which is less than a couple of weeks away. If you want to attend these training sessions the time to register is now. You can learn more about the seminar presentations and how to register from links on the seminar’s home page.
SPAM Blocker is my personal software solution for filtering spam, and we just released a new edition with fresh filters. There are well over 100 users of SPAM Blocker, and my test installation has blocked over 115,000 spam messages. I implemented SPAM Blocker with VBA in a module that runs behind Outlook 2000, Outlook 2002, or Outlook 2003. The solution demonstrates advanced logic for processing strings and contains over 1,500 filter values. One of the most distinctive features of the package is that I update its filter set about twice a month. This means that you can download a more recent version of SPAM Blocker whenever the spam bypassing the filters becomes too high. It is absolutely essential to refresh filter values because spammers are always devising new techniques to get around formerly effective ways of blocking their messages.
All VB.NET/ADO.NET seminar registrants will receive a one-year license for SPAM Blocker. This will entitle them to free updates for the life of the license. At the end of the license, users can renew their license or update the filters themselves. In addition to receiving the SPAM Blocker software, seminar registrants also get a short session on how to install and use SPAM Blocker.
In a move that demonstrates Microsoft’s commitment to making .NET software easy to use and acquire, Microsoft recently announced the availability of a new suite of Express products that you can download for free. As of now, there are six individual Express suite components. Two that should be of substantial interest to you are Visual Basic 2005 Express and SQL Server 2005 Express. Each Express component is especially tailored to contain the essential elements from the full-scale professional editions. The Express suite particularly targets hobbyists and non-enterprise developers. If you have been waiting for a low cost way to get your hands on the latest .NET software, this may be it.
While our VB.NET/ADO.NET seminar does not explicitly target either the Express suite components or the Visual Studio 2005, all, or nearly all, our samples should run in the suite components. If you wanted to register for our seminar, but you didn’t know if you could afford the software, these Express components may be a valuable resource. In any event, it is worth checking out the Express suite site.
Did you know that you can get a full working version of SQL Server 2000 for free? Well at least it is free for 120 days. That’s how long Microsoft licenses its SQL Server 2000 Evaluation edition. You can learn more about the evaluation edition from the Microsoft SQL Server site. Here’s the URL for downloading the evaluation edition. Copy it into your browser:
